How do I save a short excerpt from my own podcast?

Cue your own episode in a Chrome tab, start Tabtone just before the passage and stop after the excerpt. Review the suggested tracks, merge speech pauses that should stay together and export the clip with a descriptive name.

Choose an excerpt with a clear purpose

A producer may need a short quote for a trailer, a guest may want to review one answer, or an editor may need an example of a problem in a published episode. Start with the destination. A useful excerpt has enough context to make sense without requiring the entire episode.

If you still have your podcast project or master audio, cutting from that source gives you more control. Tabtone is a practical alternative when the passage you need is already playing in the browser. Use material you own or have permission to reuse, including any guest contributions or music involved in the excerpt.

Capture the passage

  1. Find the start and end in your browser player. Leave a little lead-in before the first word and plan a short tail after the last sentence.
  2. Pause before the start, open Tabtone on the episode’s tab and confirm the source. Free recording stops and saves at three minutes, so choose a brief excerpt rather than starting an entire episode.
  3. Click Record this tab, return to the player and start playback. Keep Chrome and the source tab open.
  4. After the passage, open Tabtone and click Stop & save. In the studio, click the large recording title and use a name such as “Episode 12 — guest answer”.
  5. Preview each proposed track. Natural speech pauses may create several suggestions; remove unwanted boundaries with Merge at until the answer stays together.
  6. Click the track name to add a useful label, select MP3 or WAV, then choose Export for that track.

Listen to both ends

The Trim silence at the start & end setting trims quiet edges of every resulting track and keeps an 80 millisecond safety margin. It is not a precise sentence editor. If a soft first word or breath sounds clipped, lower the silence threshold under Fine-tune quiet audio, or disable edge trimming and check again.

Tabtone does not remove background noise, isolate a guest, transcribe speech or add fades. Use a separate editor for those jobs. An MP3 export adds lossy encoding; WAV avoids that additional lossy step but does not turn the browser playback into your original podcast master.

Open the downloaded file in the player or editing tool where you will use it before deleting the local take. For a series of excerpts, name the recording and its tracks consistently. The track splitting guide covers how to keep an answer together when the speaker pauses.

Keep a little audio of your own.
