Why is my quiet music being split into too many tracks?

A quiet passage can fall below Tabtone’s silence threshold long enough to look like a gap. Lower the threshold to a more negative value, try a longer gap and merge any remaining unwanted boundaries after listening to the track.

A quiet passage is still part of the music

A sparse piano introduction or an ambient tail may look like silence to a level detector even though it matters to the piece. Tabtone’s suggestions use loudness over time. They do not identify song structures, musical phrases or separate instruments.

For example, you might capture a short section of your own generated soundtrack to compare two arrangements. If a soft breakdown becomes a separate track, the useful fix is to preserve that passage with its neighbors. You do not need to record again merely because a suggested boundary is wrong.

Adjust one thing at a time

  1. Stop and save the take, then open it in the studio. Click Preview on the affected tracks so you know which musical passage caused the split.
  2. Expand Fine-tune quiet audio. The default silence threshold is −48 dBFS. Move it lower, toward a more negative number, to count quieter passages as sound. Try a modest change and listen again.
  3. If brief quiet passages still create too many suggestions, increase Split when silence lasts. A longer gap requires a longer quiet interval before a split is suggested; the slider ranges from 0.5 to 5 seconds.
  4. For an isolated boundary you do not want, click its Merge at button. Restore split at can bring it back if you change your mind.
  5. Check the beginning and ending with Trim silence at the start & end enabled and disabled. Export only after the soft attack and tail sound right.

Choose a sensible balance

A very low threshold may keep room noise or a quiet background bed above the detection level. That can remove useful split suggestions between pieces. Aim for settings that fit this take, rather than a universal value for every source. If the source never becomes quiet, silence splitting cannot reliably separate it into songs.

Changing the threshold does not make the audio louder, remove noise or recover missing detail. It changes the analysis used for suggestions and edge trimming. For the underlying distinction, see how automatic edge trimming works.

Your original recording is retained while you experiment. Restore suggested splits restores boundaries at the current gap and threshold settings, so it is useful after testing manual merges, but it does not undo your slider adjustments. Once the arrangement plays as intended, name the version and its tracks before exporting. The goal is a coherent excerpt you can judge fairly, rather than the largest possible number of files.
