How do I record browser audio on a Mac without a virtual audio driver?
Tabtone records the audio of the Chrome tab you choose, so its workflow does not require a virtual audio-routing driver. Use the local extension in desktop Chrome 116 or newer, start capture from the source tab and export the saved take in the studio.
Use a tab recording for a tab-sized task
If the sound you need is already playing in Chrome, recording that tab can be a straightforward way to keep a short reference. You might be checking your own web app’s audio, saving an approved lesson passage or collecting a playback version of music you created.
This method is suited to that browser source. Tabtone does not record your Mac’s entire sound output, capture another application or mix your microphone with the tab. If your task includes a desktop music application or live narration, you need a workflow that supports those sources.
Start with the source tab
- Install the unpacked Tabtone preview using the manual installation instructions. The local build requires desktop Chrome 116 or newer.
- Open the ordinary web tab containing the audio you own or have permission to save. Play a moment to check that the intended sound is present, then cue the start.
- Click Chrome’s Extensions button, open Tabtone and check the source title in its popup. Click Record this tab and begin playback.
- Keep Chrome and the source tab open while recording. You can close the popup; the REC badge indicates that capture is active.
- Reopen Tabtone and click Stop & save. In the studio, preview the result, rename it and export the track you need.
Check the scope and duration
Free takes stop and save locally at three minutes. The ten-minute option is an explicit local Pro preview, with no paid licence connected. It must be enabled and selected before the next take. There is no continuous or unlimited recording mode, so plan a short passage with room to finish.
Because the selected tab is the source, sound produced inside it is included. A chat alert or embedded player in that page may therefore become part of the take. Audio from a different tab and ambient room noise are outside Tabtone’s microphone-free recording path. See how selected-tab capture works if you have several browser sources open.
Finish with a file you have checked
Choose MP3 or stereo 48 kHz 16-bit PCM WAV and export each wanted track individually. WAV does not recover detail missing from the source; choose the format for your next step. Listen to the downloaded file before deleting the local take.
Browser-internal pages cannot be recorded, and protected media may be unavailable. Tabtone does not bypass those restrictions. For an initial check of the studio controls, use its generated sample before making a real recording.
Keep a little audio of your own.
