Can I close the Tabtone popup while a recording is running?
Yes. Closing the Tabtone popup leaves the current take recording in the background, while the red REC badge remains visible. Keep Chrome and the source tab open, and stop the take deliberately when you have the passage you need.
Let the source page stay usable
The extension popup is where you start a take, but it does not have to cover the page throughout recording. Closing it is useful when you need to operate a player, follow a short demonstration or see the controls in your own web app. Tabtone’s offscreen recorder continues capturing the selected tab.
This is background capture for the current take, with the same duration limit. It is not an unattended recorder that restarts itself or rolls into another file. Free takes stop and save locally at three minutes. Check the selected recording length before starting a longer take.
Start, close and return
- Open the audio source tab and Tabtone, then confirm the source title and selected recording length.
- Click Record this tab. Start the permitted playback or action you want to capture.
- Click outside the popup to close it. Continue using the source page without closing the tab itself. Watch for the red REC badge on the extension.
- When the useful passage is finished, open Tabtone again and click Stop & save.
- Alternatively, choose Open recordings to open the studio during the take. Its recording notice also has a Stop & save button.
Know which actions end capture
Closing the source tab ends and saves the recording. Navigating within that tab keeps capture running, so a new page’s audio may become part of the same take. Keep your playback in place until you have stopped.
Closing Chrome, reloading or removing the extension, or losing the recorder ends capture. Reopening a popup does not resume an interrupted take. The duration selected when the take began also remains its limit, even if you change the preference for a later recording.
Check the save before moving on
After stopping, use Preview to listen to the recording and make sure the ending is present. Rename it while the details are fresh. Export important tracks to ordinary files: a local autosave is useful, but it is not an independent backup or a cloud copy.
If Chrome stopped unexpectedly, the studio can recover fully committed saved audio and mark the take interrupted. The final seconds can be missing, and a partial browser original may not play. Follow the interrupted-recording steps before changing or removing the extension.
For planned passages near the available limit, choose the take length first. For a finished file you can keep separately, use the backup workflow.
Put your browser audio to use.
Record the tab you choose, split it into tracks and save the parts you need as MP3 or WAV.
