Can I recover a Tabtone recording after Chrome or the recorder stops?

Reopen Tabtone’s recordings studio to look for a recovered, interrupted take. Tabtone can retain fully committed local PCM audio, but the last seconds may be missing, and an interrupted original browser recording may not play.

Check the saved take before recording again

If Chrome closes unexpectedly while you are capturing a short piece of your own audio, the take may not be entirely lost. Tabtone saves PCM chunks locally while recording. Recovery depends on what was fully written before the interruption, rather than on the elapsed time you remember seeing.

There is an important difference between stopping the popup and stopping the recorder. Closing the popup normally leaves recording running. Closing Chrome, reloading the extension or losing the recording process ends capture. Reopening the studio does not automatically resume it.

Find and verify the recovered audio

  1. Reopen Chrome using the same profile and the same existing Tabtone installation. Avoid removing the extension or clearing its storage while you are looking for the take.
  2. Open Tabtone and choose Open recordings. Select the affected take from the library. An interrupted recording can show a recovered-audio notice explaining that only fully autosaved audio is available.
  3. Check its displayed duration, then click Preview on the tracks. Listen to the last part carefully; do not assume it contains the final phrase or ending you heard live.
  4. If the surviving audio is useful, correct split and trim settings, give the take a descriptive name and export the tracks you need as MP3 or WAV.
  5. You can also try Save original, but test that downloaded file separately. A partial browser recording may be unplayable even when the recovered PCM can still be exported.

Fill the gap with a separate take

If the ending is missing and the source can be replayed, make a new short recording of that section. Keep enough context to identify where it belongs. Tabtone does not stitch separate recordings together, so use another editor if you need a single continuous result.

The normal limits still apply to the next recording. Free takes stop at three minutes; check the selected recording length before starting. Recovery does not lift those limits or restart a stopped take. Leave storage space available and watch for any saving error during the new capture.

Local autosave is useful protection, but it is not a backup or a guarantee. Removing the extension or clearing its storage can remove the library, and unwritten audio cannot be recovered by the studio. Once you have checked the surviving files, follow the export-and-backup routine so the useful portion also exists outside the browser.

Put your browser audio to use.

Record the tab you choose, split it into tracks and save the parts you need as MP3 or WAV.
